Meet Our Pigs
The Pig Who Started it All
In the spring of 2020, as the covid-19 pandemic was causing havoc across the globe, a tiny guinea pig sat seriously ill in a pet store cage. Gertie was looking for some supplies, saw the baby in the case and recognized that she didn’t appear well. She worked with the employees of the store and took her home that day.
The piggie was named Petunia, although she quickly got the nickname Tuna and it suited her much better. She was much sicker than Gertie knew and ended up with a terrible respiratory infection and eye infection.
It would be a few months before she was well enough to accept a cagemate. Gertie, along with her partner Ken, started the search for another guinea pig and found a terrible need for those who could help rehabilitate and rehome. It began with just a sprinkling of pigs and bloomed into the sanctuary and rescue that exists today.
Tuna passed away at the age of six, at home surround by those that loved her. She is missed and continues to serve as an inspiration for the rescue.
It all started with a pig named Tuna.
